What is HPV and how can you get infected?

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a group of viruses that can cause serious health conditions, including genital warts and various types of cancer, such as:

  • cervical cancer,

  • anal cancer,

  • penile cancer,

  • throat cancer,

  • vulvar cancer.

HPV is mainly transmitted through sexual contact — vaginal, anal, and oral. Infection is very common: most sexually active people will contract it at some point in their lives.

Why should you get vaccinated?

HPV vaccination is one of the most effective ways to prevent infection and its complications. Gardasil 9 is a modern vaccine that protects against nine HPV types, including those that cause cancer and genital warts.

When should you get vaccinated?

  • Ideally before the onset of sexual activity.

  • Recommended age: 11–12 years.

  • Adults up to 26 years should also consider vaccination.

  • In some cases, doctors may recommend vaccination for people over 26.

Are there side effects of Gardasil 9?

The vaccine is safe and well-tolerated. Possible mild side effects include:

  • pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site,

  • headache, fever, fatigue,

  • nausea or dizziness.

These symptoms are usually mild and temporary.

Do I need a medical consultation before vaccination?

Yes. A doctor will evaluate your health and rule out contraindications. At Aurora Medical, the consultation and vaccination are carried out in a single visit.

How is Gardasil 9 administered?

For adults and teenagers over 15 years old:

  • 1st dose: Day 0

  • 2nd dose: 2 months after the first

  • 3rd dose: 6 months after the first

How long does Gardasil 9 protection last?

Studies show protection lasts for at least 10 years, and likely much longer. Research is ongoing.

Gardasil 9 vs. other HPV vaccines

  • Gardasil 9 (9-valent): protects against HPV 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, 58.
