What is the NIPT test
The non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT — Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing) is a genetic screening that allows highly accurate detection of the risk of chromosomal abnormalities in your baby as early as the 10th week of pregnancy. During pregnancy, fragments of fetal DNA circulate in the mother's blood — in the laboratory, these are isolated and analysed. Unlike invasive procedures (amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling), NIPT carries no risk to either the baby or the mother.
How the test works
The procedure is very simple and takes less than 30 minutes at the clinic.

NIPT Test in Warsaw — everything you need to know
The non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT) is a modern method of genetic diagnostics that has transformed the approach to prenatal screening over the past decade. At the Aurora Medical clinic in Warsaw, you can take either the Harmony or Panorama test — two of the most thoroughly researched NIPT tests in the world.
How NIPT works at the molecular level
During pregnancy, fragments of cell-free DNA circulate in the mother's blood — including the baby's DNA (cffDNA, cell-free fetal DNA). Its proportion grows from a few percent in early pregnancy to 10–15% in the second trimester. Modern sequencing methods (NGS) allow these fragments to be isolated, counted per chromosome, and analysed for abnormalities — for example, an extra copy of chromosome 21 (Down syndrome).
What conditions NIPT detects
- Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) — the most common chromosomal abnormality, risk increases with maternal age
- Trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome) — severe condition, often incompatible with life
- Trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome) — severe developmental condition
- Sex chromosome aneuploidies — Turner, Klinefelter, XYY, XXX syndromes
- Microdeletions — 22q11.2 (DiGeorge), 7q11.23 (Williams), 5p- (Cri-du-chat), 15q11-q13 (Prader-Willi/Angelman)

NIPT vs. classic first-trimester screening (PAPP-A)
The classic first-trimester screening (PAPP-A + βHCG + ultrasound markers) has a sensitivity of about 85–90% for Down syndrome with 5% false-positive results. NIPT, by contrast, offers sensitivity above 99% with less than 0.1% false positives. That is why, when the PAPP-A result is unclear, NIPT is recommended before invasive methods.
NIPT vs. amniocentesis
Amniocentesis is an invasive procedure (sampling of amniotic fluid through a puncture of the abdominal wall) with a miscarriage risk of around 0.1–0.5%. NIPT carries no physical risk to the fetus. However, amniocentesis is a diagnostic test (100% accuracy), while NIPT is a screening test. Therefore, if NIPT is positive, amniocentesis may be recommended for confirmation.
How to prepare for the test
No special preparation is required. You can eat and drink as usual. No fasting is needed. It is advisable to bring your most recent ultrasound result (to confirm gestational age). At the consultation, the doctor will choose the optimal test based on your history and perform the blood draw the same day.
