Proctologist in Warsaw

a discreet consultation for pain, bleeding and hemorrhoids

Blood after a bowel movement, a painful lump, itching or discomfort are reasons to see a doctor and find the cause. Similar symptoms occur in different conditions, so treatment is best chosen after an examination. At the visit, the doctor discusses your symptoms, explains the necessary diagnostic steps and draws up a plan.

About the specialty

What a proctologist does

A proctologist deals with diseases of the anal canal, rectum and surrounding tissues. Patients come with pain, bleeding, lumps, inflammation and bowel-emptying problems.

The goal of the consultation is to establish the likely cause of the symptoms, determine the necessary workup and choose treatment. Depending on the situation, a gastroenterologist, another surgeon or a pelvic floor specialist may be needed.

A proctology consultation does not mean you will necessarily need surgery. At the same time, some conditions do require surgical care, and it is important to recognize them in time.

Symptoms

When to see a proctologist

Book a consultation if you notice any of the following symptoms.

  • Blood on toilet paper, on the stool surface or in the toilet
  • Pain during or after a bowel movement
  • Itching, burning or irritation around the anus
  • A lump, a painful nodule or swelling
  • Tissue prolapse during bowel movements
  • Mucous or purulent discharge
  • A feeling of incomplete emptying
  • Difficulty controlling gas or stool
  • Recurring discomfort when sitting

When booking, say which symptom bothers you most and how long it has been present. If the pain is severe or your condition is rapidly worsening, flag it right away.

Blood after a bowel movement: is it always hemorrhoids

No. Bleeding can occur with hemorrhoids or an anal fissure, but also with inflammatory bowel disease, polyps and other conditions. Even if hemorrhoids were diagnosed before, new or recurring bleeding cannot automatically be attributed to them alone.

The doctor considers the pattern of the bleeding, bowel habit changes, family history, previous tests and other symptoms. When needed, further bowel diagnostics are ordered.

Emergencies

When urgent help is needed

For heavy or continuous bleeding, large clots, fainting or marked weakness, seek emergency care. In Poland — 112 or 999.

Do not delay an urgent medical assessment if you develop:

  • Severe, worsening pain in the anal area together with fever
  • A painful swelling, redness or purulent discharge
  • Black, tarry stool
  • Bloody diarrhea with worsening wellbeing

With such symptoms, waiting for a routine appointment may not be the right option.

Conditions

Conditions a proctologist treats

The treatment method depends on the established cause, symptom severity and previous treatment.

Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoidal disease can cause bleeding, prolapsing nodules, itching and discomfort. Thrombosis of an external nodule can produce a painful lump. Treatment depends on the type and severity of the changes: normalizing stool, adjusting habits, medication or a procedure. Not everyone needs surgery. The cause of the symptoms must be confirmed first: telling hemorrhoids apart from other conditions on your own can be difficult.
Anal fissure
A tear in the lining of the anal canal. It often causes sharp pain during bowel movements that may persist afterwards, and a small amount of bright red blood. Treatment aims to create conditions for healing, reduce spasm and normalize stool. A long-standing fissure may need additional methods. Fissures are often mistaken for hemorrhoids, although the treatment differs.
Perianal abscess and fistula
An abscess is a collection of pus in the tissues near the anus: severe pain, swelling, fever. It needs prompt surgical assessment; drainage is often required — antibiotics alone do not replace removing the focus of pus. An anal fistula is an abnormal tract between the anal canal and the skin, with recurring discharge; treatment is chosen individually, considering its location and sphincter function.
Anal itching and irritation
Itching is a symptom, not a ready diagnosis. At the consultation, the doctor assesses the skin, any discharge and accompanying complaints. Say which products you have already used: ointments, suppositories, wet wipes or antiseptics — this helps avoid repeating ineffective treatment.
Emptying difficulties and incontinence
If you have to strain hard, keep feeling incomplete emptying or have problems controlling stool, discuss it with the doctor. The cause may require a broader workup. After the initial assessment, the proctologist will determine which tests and consultations are needed next.
The first visit

How the first proctology visit works

The scope of the exam depends on your symptoms and tolerance. You can ask questions, request a pause or stop the examination.

1
Discussing your symptoms
The doctor asks when the symptoms appeared and how they relate to bowel movements; whether there is blood, mucus or other discharge; whether stool frequency and pattern have changed; any similar problems, diseases and operations in the past; what medications you take and what treatment you have tried. Tell the doctor if you feel anxious or have experienced severe pain during an examination before.
2
Explaining the examination plan
Before the exam, the doctor explains what they plan to do and why. The scope depends on your symptoms and tolerance.
3
Examining the anal area
The patient usually lies on their side with bent knees. The doctor inspects the skin and the external anal area. When indicated, a digital rectal exam is performed with a glove and lubricating gel. With significant pain, the doctor may change the order of the exam or postpone some steps.
4
Discussing the findings
The doctor explains what was found and whether further tests are needed. You leave with a plan: treatment, recommendations, a follow-up date or a referral for further diagnostics.

A definitive diagnosis cannot always be made at the first visit. What matters is understanding which next step your particular situation requires.

Comfort

Does a proctology exam hurt

“Tell the doctor about pain before the exam, and speak up during it if the pain increases.”

The exam can involve discomfort. With a fissure, marked inflammation or a painful nodule, the sensations can be stronger.

Promising a completely painless visit would be wrong. The doctor should take your tolerance into account and choose an appropriate scope of examination.

Diagnostics

Anoscopy and colonoscopy: what is the difference

These tests serve different purposes.

TestWhat it assesses
External inspectionThe skin and visible changes around the anus
Digital rectal examThe palpable part of the anal canal and rectum
AnoscopyThe anal canal and the lowest part of the rectum, using a special instrument
ColonoscopyThe large bowel, using a flexible endoscope

A colonoscopy is not performed automatically for every patient at a proctology consultation. It may be recommended for certain symptoms, risk factors or to identify the source of bleeding.

Having hemorrhoids does not rule out other causes of blood loss. If bleeding persists after treatment, a repeat assessment is needed.

When booking at Aurora Medical, ask which instrumental tests are available and whether they are included in the consultation price.

Preparation

How to prepare for a proctology visit

Preparation depends on the planned exam. When booking, ask whether your service requires any special preparation. Do not automatically follow a colonoscopy-style bowel cleansing scheme before a standard consultation.

Do I need an enema

Do not start preparing with enemas, micro-enemas or strong laxatives without the clinic’s instructions. It is especially important to agree on the approach if you have severe pain or bleeding. If the doctor prescribed preparation, follow the given scheme; if you could not complete it, say so — do not cancel the consultation on your own.

Do I need to fast

Do not restrict your diet without instructions. If a procedure requiring special preparation or anesthesia is planned, the clinic will inform you separately.

Is normal hygiene enough

Gentle external hygiene before the visit is enough. There is no need to intensively clean a painful area or apply new products “to prepare”.

What about my medications

Mention all your medications, especially blood thinners. Do not stop prescribed treatment on your own.

What documents to bring

  • Results of previous consultations
  • Colonoscopy and other test reports
  • Biopsy results, if any were done
  • Discharge summaries after surgery
  • A list of medications and allergy information

If you have not had any tests yet, you can start with a consultation. There is no need to get a colonoscopy or a large set of lab tests on your own just for the first visit.

Treatment

How proctological conditions are treated

The method depends on the established cause, symptom severity and previous treatment.

Conservative treatment
For some conditions, the doctor recommends adjusting stool consistency, diet and toilet habits, plus medications when indicated. In hemorrhoidal disease, for example, enough dietary fiber, less straining and avoiding prolonged sitting on the toilet can play an important role.
Outpatient procedures
In selected cases of hemorrhoidal disease, rubber band ligation, sclerotherapy and other methods are used. The right procedure depends on the type and stage of the disease.
Surgical treatment
Surgery may be needed for certain forms of disease, complications or insufficient effect of other methods. When needed, the doctor will explain the reason for the recommendation and the further treatment pathway.

This list describes possible treatment methods and does not mean all of them are performed at Aurora Medical. The availability of a specific procedure is confirmed separately.

After childbirth

Seeing a proctologist after childbirth

After childbirth, you may experience pain, bleeding, hemorrhoids or difficulty controlling gas and stool. These complaints are worth discussing with a doctor rather than treating as an inevitable part of recovery.

Mention tears, stitches, sphincter injuries and previous procedures. This information matters for choosing the workup and treatment, especially if surgery for an anal fissure is being considered.

If you are breastfeeding, also tell the doctor before any medications are prescribed.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral to see a proctologist?+
No referral is needed for a private consultation at Aurora Medical.
Does the doctor see both women and men?+
Proctological conditions occur in patients of both sexes. When booking, ask about age limits and choose the right consultation.
Can I come just for a conversation?+
You can start by discussing your symptoms and concerns. However, without an examination the doctor cannot always establish the cause. The need for each step of the exam is discussed with you.
Is an enema required before the first visit?+
There is no universal scheme for all visits. Get the clinic’s instructions when booking and do not start any cleansing on your own, especially with pain or bleeding.
Do I need a colonoscopy before the consultation?+
Not necessarily. It is often sensible to see the doctor first, who will determine the indications and the necessary scope of diagnostics.
Can I book an appointment if I am bleeding?+
Yes, light or recurring bleeding is a reason to find the cause. With heavy blood loss, weakness or fainting, seek emergency care.
If there is no pain, should blood in the stool still be checked?+
Yes. The absence of pain does not explain the source of bleeding. Discuss the symptom with a doctor.
Do hemorrhoids always need surgery?+
No. The approach depends on symptoms, the type and severity of the disease. For some patients conservative treatment is enough; others are recommended procedures or surgery.
Can a diagnosis be made from a photo?+
A photo does not replace a full assessment. It does not allow examining the anal canal, palpation or reliably identifying the source of bleeding.
Can I come during my period?+
Mention it when booking and check the conditions for the planned exam. If the symptoms are acute, do not postpone the visit just because of your period.
What language is the consultation in?+
Olha Kovalenko consults in Ukrainian, Polish and Russian. If you need another language, contact the clinic before booking.
Can I get an appointment soon?+
Available dates are shown in the online booking. With severe symptoms, tell the administrator so the right pathway can be arranged.
